Arrival!!

After a quick flight I have arrived in Ottawa!! There is still lots of color here compared to home and I didn't pack my big camera. I guess my trusty point and shoot will have to suffice.

I'm looking forward to some down time and hope to go home feeling better than I have been all week!!

Happy Friday

I found a new background that I like.....but the comments are appearing before the post...gonna have to think that one through.

I'm feeling a little better today and hopefully better tomorrow.   I might even come up with the energy for a picture post!

Disappointment....

I've been having a rough few days.  Nothing in particular....

Ok so it's a few things....

There are some problems between myself and 2 other family members.  Not so much with one as with the other, but when there is a problem with one it always ends up to be with both.  Does that make any sense at all?  I chose to write a note and send it to them so that I could get some things off of my chest that had been bothering me for ages.  It got turned around that the problems were all mine and they accepted no responsibility or remorse.  I responded with another email and so far have had no response.  I have been removed from their contacts on a very popular social networking site and above all of that, I am hurt.  Hurt that the blood relative is putting their spouse first and not their child.  I feel very protective of my child.  If I see someone treating her in a way that I don't like, I will defend her.  I don't understand how a parent cannot or will not stand in defense of their own children and allows their spouse to treat the children(we are all adults now) with such a lack of respect.  It makes little sense to me.  This has been going on for more than 25 years and I should be used to it, but it still bothers me.

We put my father in law on a list for geared to income housing here in our area about a year ago and we got a call last week that there was an opening!  I went and looked at the place today and it's almost identical to the unit he lives is now which is 6 hours from here.  Sometime in December hubby will be moving him here and I called one of hubby's sisters tonight to tell her and was hoping for some moral support and excitement that her father will be closer.  I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.  He is a very nice man.  He is  an alcoholic and was not around when the kids were growing up.  That is partially his fault and partially the fault of my mother in law.  She wouldn't allow him to see the kids and he moved on.  It was a long time ago and now the attitude of some of the siblings is that they don't know him, so why should they bother with him.  If they would only take the time they would learn so much about him and realize that he would like another chance.  He is in his late 70's and his health is not great at all.  I can only hope that once he moves here that they will give him a chance and visit every now and then so that he can see his grandchildren.  Time will tell, but I will very likely end up disappointed again.

Three years ago we had new neighbors move onto our street.  A small family like ours and we really clicked.  We spend weekends together, eat at least one meal a week together and have the same interests.  I am really disappointed that they may return to their home town.  I understand why they are going, I'm just going to really miss them.  It's only 2 hours away and I know that there will be lots of mileage put on my vehicle on the weekends, but it just won't be the same as popping in at any given time. Fortunately where we camp in the summer is almost the halfway point between the 2 towns so getting together in the summer will be easier!  On another bright note, they will be that much closer to the border, so day trips to the US for shopping will be that much easier!!!

Every year there is a group of ladies that get together for an annual weekend.  We bring no children, no husbands just our credit cards and shopping gear.  The weekend was supposed to be this coming weekend.  Turns out that there is so much going on for everyone that it won't happen.  I have already booked my flights using some points and I am not canceling.  I will fly out of here on Friday morning and do some shopping on my own, then meet up with one of the ladies to spend the night in a hotel, just the two of us.  Another friend who is celebrating a birthday on the weekend is going to join us for a few hours and we are just going to kick back and relax.  Saturday we have a brunch to attend and then I am going to shop some more and then head out to spend the remainder of the weekend with my cousin and her family.  I was disappointed when things didn't work out the way they were supposed to, but I am very excited about spending some time with 2 dear friends and then being able to spend some unexpected time with family.

I have had to force myself to continue with my 365 Photography Project, but it gives me something to focus on!  I am still knitting and will be delivering 2 hats this weekend to my cousin's baby and am working on a funky hat and mitten set that I haven't decided what to do with yet!  I have one finger that is raw from the knitting needles.  I am using a worsted weight but added some fun fur to it and it's a tighter in the needles so my fingers hurt.

I think I've had a long enough pity party for one night. If you made it this far, thanks for listening! I have eggs to peel for lunches tomorrow and I have laundry to fold so that I can get it all put away tomorrow and then get my suitcase out and start filling it for the weekend.  Maybe this weekend will be just what I need to kick my ass back into gear!!

Toddler Mittens..an Easy 4 Needle Pattern

I have taken 3 or 4 different patterns that I have tried and put together a pattern of my own that I like.  I think that mittens for kids should have nice long cuffs.  There is nothing I hate more than seeing kids playing and their little wrists are turning red from the cold because the sleeve of their jackets ride up and the mittens aren't long enough.
Here is what I have come up with!  Enjoy!!

These were knit using 2 3/4mm needless and a 4 ply worsted, I think it was Red Heart and they were knit for a little guy who is 14 months old.  I have no idea what the gauge is, but they fit him.

Cuff
Cast on 36 stitches and divided evenly on 3 needles.  Join being careful not to twist and work 2 inches in K1P1 ribbing.

Row 1   -Knit
Row 2   -knit
Row 3   -K1 P1 K3 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 4   -Repeat Row 3
Row 5   -Repeat Row 4
Row 6   -K1 P1 *M1 K1 M1 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 7   -K1 P1 K5 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 8   -Repeat row 7
Row 9   -K1 P1 M1 K3 M1 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 10 -K1 P1 K7 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 11 -Repeat Row 10
Row 12 -K1 P1 M1 K5 M1 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 13 -K1 P1 K9 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 14 -Repeat row 13
Row 15 -K1 P1 M1 K7 M1 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 16 -K1 P1 K9 P1 Knit to end of row
Row 17 -Repeat row 16 (44 stitches in total)

Row 18 -Knit 2 stitches slip the next 11 onto a stitch holder **Cast On 3 stitches and knit to the end of the row
Continue knitting the hand until it is 3 1/2 inches from the top of the ribbing.

To shape the top
Row 1  -(S1 K1 PSSO K4) repeat to the end of the row(30 stitches)
Row 2  -Knit
Row 3  -Knit
Row 4  -(S1 K1 PSSO K3)repeat to the end of the row(24 stitches)
Row 5  -Knit
Row 6  -(S1 K1 PSSO K2) repeat to the end of the row(18 stitches)
Row 7  -Knit
Row 8  -(S1 K1 PSSO K1) repeat to the end of the row(12 stitches)
Row 9  -(S1 K1 PSSO ) repeat to the end of the row(6 stitches)
Break the yarn and thread it through the remaining stitches, pull it tightly and slip it through the top and fasten and work in the tail.

To make the thumb Pick up the 11 stitches off the holder and pick up 5 more stitches around the thumb opening.  Divide these stitches onto 3 needles and knit until the thumb measures 1 inch (about 12 rows) on the inside of the thumb.  To shape the top of the thumb
Row 1 -(K2tog) repeat to end of row(8 stitches)
Row 2 -Knit
Row 3 -(K2tog) repeat to end of row(4 stitches)
Break the yarn and thread it through the remaining stitches, pull it tightly and slip it through the top and this is where I like to to be sure there a no holes.  If there is I weave the tail and fix any holes where the cold might get in.  Fasten the yarn and weave in the ends.

*M1 slip a stitch in front of the next stitch onto the left needle then knit it and knit the next stitch

** I like to turn my work and cast on the 3 stitches so that they are cast onto the right had needle when you work is facing you and then they will be knit in the next row not in the same row that you have just cast on(make sense?)

Below are some pictures!  If I haven't written it clearly be sure to pop me off an email at itsawip at gmail dot com and I will try to explain better or take more pictures!

Morning Beauty

I looked out my door this morning and this is what I saw!
Had I waited another 5 minutes to go and take the picture I would have missed it.  It is now gray and rainy out....Good day to curl up on the couch with my knitting.

Ten on Tuesday

10 Ways to Have Fun on Long Car Rides

1.  It's the digital age and we have a DVD player, make sure to pack new and loved movies
2.  New CD's or playlists on the MP3 Player are always good
3.  A good book.  Nothing passes the time like reading
4.  A pillow.  Nothing is worse than a sore neck from sleeping in a weird position.
5.  Keep you camera handy.  You never know what you are going to see.
6.  With the kids car bingo is fun!  Make them up on the computer or use erasable white boards
7.  Make a list of all the towns you have to go through and then as you go through them cross them off the list!  We love that one
8.  Coloring books, blank paper, markers, crayons..all the fun stuff for kids
9.  I like to bring simple knitting.  No big patterns.  Hats and mitts are great
10. Chatting.  Nothing makes a long strip seem shorter than chatting with your traveling companion!

Pumpkin Muffins

It seems everything is pumpkin this week!  With our Thanksgiving this weekend we will have all kinds of it!!  My mom makes an amazing Pumpkin Pie with a crust, I baked 2 Pumpkin Spice Cakes this week and of course the Pumpkin Butter.  Today I made 7 dozen Pumpkin Muffins.  There are about 40 being sent to school for the class to have a treat and some to go to the staff in the office!
Here is what I made!!
Both were found at www.cooks.com

The first batch I made were very simple

PUMPKIN MUFFINS

3 1/3 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
3 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
Mix dry ingredients and add:
1 c. oil
4 eggs
2/3 c. water
2 c. pumpkin
Preheat oven to 350F degrees.
Prepare muffin tins by greasing with vegetable oil or butter and sprinkling lightly with flour. Shake out excess.
Fill muffin tins three-quarters full and bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

I made a simple Cream Cheese Icing and decorated them!
Plain Muffins

All decorated for school tomorrow

PUMPKIN APPLE STREUSEL MUFFINS

MUFFINS:
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 c. Libby's solid pack pumpkin
1/2 c. vegetable oil
2 c. peeled finely chopped apples
In large bowl, combine first five ingredients and set aside. In medium bowl, combine eggs, pumpkin, and oil. Add liquid ingredients to dry ingredients. Stir just until moistened. Stir in apples.Spoon batter into greased or paper lined muffin cups filling them 3/4 full. Sprinkle streusel topping (see below) over batter.
Bake muffins at 350°F. for 35 or 40 minutes until done. For 6 giant muffins, increase baking time to 40 or 45 minutes.
STREUSEL TOPPING:
2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
1/4 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
4 tbsp. butter
In small bowl, combine flour, sugar and cinnamon. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.

In the oven
All done!

These are sooooo good! My mom walked in the door just as I was taking one batch out of the oven.  She had one and then told me that she returned some empty containers so she should be able to take them home full again. Then she called my Nana and told her about them and my nana suggested that maybe I could email the recipe to my aunt so that my aunt could make some for her too!

It has been a really long day and I think it's about time to call it a night!  If you make either of these, please let me know what you think!!

Free Prints!

I subscribe to a great blog called http://Smartcanucks.ca  There are normally 10 or 12 new offers, freebies and specials posted each day.  Here is one I found that I thought was interesting!  If you go the website there are all kinds of freebies, contests and giveaways! I love it!

How many of you have a ton of photos on your computer that you keep meaning to get printed?   I know I do.  Well now you can print 25 of them for free at Costco.  Just enter promotional code CWMSA816 at checkout to get your free prints.  This promotion is running until November 14 so you have lots of time to decide on which 25 memories you would like to add to your photo album.  Oh and if you’ve never ordered prints from Costco online before, you get 25 free prints with your first order, so 50 freebie prints!

Pumpkin Butter

I've made this twice this year now!  It is good on bagels with cream cheese, toast, warmed on vanilla ice cream and my sister said it's great just on spoon.  I also had a friend tell me that they used it to glaze Pork Chops and it was amazing!  Enjoy if you decided to make it!

I got the recipe out of a book called Bernardin Guide to Home Preserving.  I thought it sounded interesting so I decided to try it!

4 cups prepared pumpkin pulp, about one 8 inch pie pumpkin
2 cups of brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 ts salt
1/2 cup liquid honey
1/2 orange juice

Prepare your jars, I keep a pot of boiling water on the stove and boil the jars in there.  I keep a smaller pot with the rings and seals boiling as well.
Wash your pumpkin, cut it into large pieces and take the seeds and and stringy stuff out.
Boil your pumpkin until it's cooked, it will feel like cooked potatoes when done
I then put it into cold water to make it cooler to peel the skin.
Use  your food processor and puree the pumpkin.  It says in the recipe to put it all in and puree it, but I just did the pumpkin
Pour it all into a bowl and bring to a boil, reduce the heat and boil gently until thick.  I turned it right down to low and it still spit and spattered at me...stir lots!
Ladle it into the prepared jars leaving 1/4 inch of headroom at the top and then put the lids on.
Place the jars into a canning pot ( I used the same on for boiling the jars) and bring the water back to a boil.  Once it is boiled leave the jars in for 10 minutes.  Remove, cool and store.

The recipe says it makes 4 250ml jars.  The first single batch I made only made 3.

Ten on Tuesday

This one sounds like fun!  I'm more of a spring person, but fall has it's advantages!

1.  It's wonderful to see the sunrise in the morning.  The sun is up far too early in the spring for a non morning person like me to see.
2.  The smell of wood stoves burning in the evenings
3.  The beautiful palette of colors no matter where you look
4.  Photo opportunities!! Frost in the morning, changing colors
5.  Preserves and the smell in the house while doing them
6.  Canadian Thanksgiving!  This weekend is family, turkey and visiting
7.  Not feeling guilty about sitting in front of the TV knitting because it's too chilly outside to do anything
8.  Hats and Mitts!  Love to knit them, love to see them on the kids
9.  I love being back into a routine.  Summer is wonderful, but routine with kids is a good thing
10.  Christmas is coming!!

Photo and Picture Storage

My computer is loaded with pictures.  I currently have 33, 968 photos in 191 folders on this computer.  I spent a few days this past summer organizing them in order of year and then month and then backed them all up to an external hard drive and copied them to DVD's and have them stored at my mom's house.  I hate to delete any of them!  And now that I am doing a 365 project the number is climbing everyday.  I delete nothing.  Even if the shots suck, I keep them and then I can go back and see what settings I was on and maybe figure out where I messed up.  I am torn between picking up another portable hard drive and keeping it attached to the computer and taking all the pictures off of her and freeing up some space. I really need to learn some photoshop tricks too!

On that note, here are a few from the last few days
